In order to do scuba diving and snorkeling you need to know how to swim. It is recommended that you do the BSA swimming test.

The test consists of jumping feet first into water above your head, leveling off, and swimming strongly for 75 yards. You can use breast stroke, trudgen, side stroke or crawl. Turn and for 25 yards do an easy backstroke. 100 yards must be completed in one swim. No stopping! Resting is done by floating on the surface of the water.

Working in water can be dangerous if you are not fit thus a diver needs to be fit and healthy. Have a physical examination with your doctor before any tiring exercise such as water activities.

Snorkeling can be much enjoyable and is not very complicated to learn. It will help you build confidence in crossing through the waters. Snorkeling is often the first step and a preparation towards learning to scuba dive.

The basic requirement for snorkeling is a mask, fins and a snorkel. To start with, you could hire equipment from your local club to learn how to use the equipment before buying.

When you're about to purchase, always look for quality gears.

Purchase a mask that fits correctly for comfort and with no leaks. Masks are made of plastic, rubber or silicone. Silicone is more expensive but offers better comfort and durability.

Mask lenses should be of tempered or toughened glass for eye protection and scratch resistant view of the underwater world. It is recommended to seek for professional advice at your sports shop in choosing the best mask. Buy the best you can afford.

Snorkels allow you to breathe at the surface of the water without lifting your head. It is a tube with a mouthpiece basically. In choosing your snorkel to use, you have to check and test different mouthpieces for a comfortable fit. Snorkeling club instructor is a good source for advice for proper care and maintenance of your mask and snorkel.

Fins can either be a shoe fin or an open heel fin. Take note, test different products for comfort and size.

Additional protection in warm countries is essential to protect exposed skin from the harsh sun while snorkeling. Wear a UV treated t-shirt and use water resistant sunscreen.

In cooler countries, you might like to invest in a wet suit which will provide warmth and protect against abrasions and stings from sea creatures. This would apply to both scuba diving / snorkeling.
